Tess Movie Response

Hi! For those of you who came to see the film, I'd like to have a little conversation about what you thought! It's kind of fun to watch a film that you've read the book for, and also to share it with others, so I hope you enjoyed watching it together. :)

Post a comment below by Sunday, April 18th. Stop back by and respond to one other student for a full ten points extra credit!

  • Did you come to watch the film with the class, and how long did you stay? (If you participated in the dance concert, just let me know.)
  • How did the film compare with the book? What differences did you notice?
  • What was your favorite part of the film? In other words, what scene(s) most stood out to you?
  • What would you say to those who have not seen the film? Do you think they missed out by not watching it with us?
  • (Optional): Do you think we should aim for another movie night to watch any other film adaptations?

  1. Oh darn! Look who's got the first comment. (:

So, I totally spaced the movie night itself, but ended up renting and watching the entire thing by myself the next day. And now, I'm very proud that I remembered to post on this blog thing because I really need some extra credit. Um, yeah.

Okay. Comparing the film to the book, I would have to say that the movie was in my opinion better - mainly because it didn't last so long. Tess was pretty annoying which was a similarity I guess, and the storyline seemed very familiar. Although some stuff was missing, the only difference that really bothered me were inconsistencies between how I had imagined the characters and locations while reading the book to how they actually appeared in the movie. Angel was cuter than I'd pictured though...so I guess that was a plus! (:

My favorite part was when Tess throws a fit on Alec and stabs him with a butter knife, my least favorite was when I ran out of ice cream and had to run upstairs to get some more.

I don't mean to be harsh, but um, you seriously did not miss out if you haven't seen this film. Trust me, you're much happier that way. Blehregghghghh.

I really would like another movie night though! I'm really sad I missed out on this one. Maybe we could finish A Knight's Tale?

    The end.

  2. I came to the movie night! Woot! I was there the whole time. It was great fun.

I thought the film did a great job of staying true to the book, although I did notice that there were some things left out. Like Angel's whole sleepwalking thing where he thinks Tess is dead. I noticed that wasn't there because for some reason that part really stood out to me in the book. And didn't Tess's mom get sick at the end, not her dad? Something like that. I think I'd have to disagree with you on the portrayals, Hannah; the settings and characters were pretty much exactly like they imagined them! (Except Tess's voice was kinda annoying in the movie. And I didn't think Angel looked anything like that. But he was cute, so it was okay. I thought Alec was kinda cute also, except for the being a creeper thing.)

Hmm... I don't know if I have a favorite part. I liked the creek scene though! (Although he didn't try to kiss her. LAME!) And I did enjoy the running commentary we had from everyone during the movie. And yeah, when she stabbed Alec. The jerk had it coming to him.

I think you are missing out if you haven't seen this, especially if you've read the book. It does a really excellent job capturing not only the story but the tone and things as well. And yes, definitely another movie night!

Oh, p.s. Channel 7 is showing the BBC version of Hamlet starring David Tennant at 7pm on April 28th, if any of you want to watch that. I've seen it and it's great! :)

  3. I thought that the movie was pretty good. I watched it with my little sister and a friend. I thought that Angel was portrayed really well. I liked how nice he was and how heart broken he looked when he had to leave Tess, when she was back with Alec. I also liked how upset he was at the end over Tess's getting taken to prison and her sentance. I thougth it was pretty close to the book. There was one scene in the book that wasn't in the movie and it made me so mad, the scene was after Tess and told Angel of what happened to her and then he sleep walks and shows how much he really does care. I wish that that would have been in there. For those who haven't seen the film I think it was good, and my friend and sister liked it. They just hated how Angel was also sort of a jerk and says we should have ended the movie after they get married. I would reccommend it because it is good and close to the book. One of my favorite parts was where Tess hits Alec, me,my sister, and my friend were all cheering at that part. I also liked how Angel helped Tess escape from the police. Those were just a few of my favorite scenes. All in all I am glad I was able to find a copy of Tess to watch.

  4. I totally agree with you Ashely, the sleepwalking scene spoke to me, and it was really lame that they didn't have it in there. It also would have been cool to have Angel trying to kiss Tess that would also have helped in showing the audience that Angel really liked Tess. Oh and Hannah I agree Angel was pretty cute!

  5. I have to agree with Ashley that Alec was rather attractive.

And, well, speaking of Ashley, we never got to see her final Tess presentation. :(
    That's no good.

  6. Oh yeah! I just made the book into a little four-page comic. It wasn't hugely awesome or anything, but I could email you the first page if you want. (I forgot to scan the rest of it before I handed it in. Silly me.) I loved your project though! :) And your poem was awesome too, Karissa. :)

  7. Josh Bell's Turn... so I thought the movie was quite intruging. I had different feelings about Tess during the movie than I did while reading the book. I was more upset at her during the book but during the movie I could see more the reasons behind her doing of murdering Alec and going back to Angel after all he had done to her. Sadly, I missed the murder scene due to playing basketball but I was there most of the movie. I enjoyed the movie better however because I enjoy trying to mimic Tess and her accent with my beloved friend Tanner. My favorite scene was when Tess said, "I don't want to kiss anyone!" to Alec. That was my favorite line by far. Sadly, I don't recommend this movie to others unless they are very bored. But hey that's an opinion :) Well I'm off for some steak...

  8. Becca says...

I was totally the first one there for this shin-dig and camped out there the whole time. :) lol

I found that the movie pretty closely followed the book. That's one of the awesome things about BBC...they take some creative liscence, but not enough to ruin the movie as far as the book is concerned.

Ms. Rhodehouse. You know me well enough to know my favorite scene, as it is the same as yours. ;)

If you missed the movie because you had a date, or went to a dance, or had something really fun to do on that Saturday night, you didn't miss out. However, if you just sat home alone, or did something stupid, yes. You missed out, because we had a BLAST!

Another movie after hours...nah. During class? Bring it on. :)

  9. So my name is Tanner Skousen and I was at the dance concert, but I came after that ended. Then I finished the movie with everyone. I thought that the movie stayed true to the book as far as plot goes, but I didn't like the acting. Tess just seemed in her own world half of the time, but thats just my opinion. I enjoyed it though. I always like to watch movies more than read books (I don't mean any offense to anyone reading that) Thats just me. :)
My favorite part would have to be the part that my good friend Josh said, because we do love to quote that line "I don't want to kiss anyone." We like to laugh at stuff like that. The movie did help me see characters and setting a lot better, so I say if we have a chance to watch a movie again... I say we do it!

  10. ps. Ms. Rhodehouse, in my previous post I said my name at the top, so here is me putting my name at the bottom like the directions said. :)

  11. The movie was so cheesy. Ahah I laughed really hard at some points. Like when Josh and Tanner said.. "I don't want to kiss ANYONE". Dorks. I was really depressed that the movie did not include the part where Angel carried Tess in his sleep! I was looking forward to that.

I agree with what Josh said about my feelings changing. Tess started to really get on my nerves during the book. She was constantly making the wrong decisions and even to this point, I don't believe she ever made a good one. But during the movie it was a little easier to connect with her and undertstand why she did and said the things she did.

Oh and I am still so irritated that Alec didn't have a long black mustache!! That would have been great!

I dont really recommend this movie to anyone, especially if you have not read the book. It was too long and it was a little dry.

I agree with Becca. Movies during class... YES. after school.. nahhhh.

  12. so....i LOVE this movie!! I came for the whole thing friday night...and thourougly enjoyed myself :)

hmmm..comparing the film to the book..well i really liked this movie because it did stick pretty close to the book..it left out a few scenes..but other than that i was fairly impressed.

My FAVORITE part of the whole movie was at the very end when Tess dies, but not because Tess dies, only because i loved seeing Angel cry. In the book it made it sound like he didn't really care because he had Tess' little sister there and she replaced Tess. BUT in the movie you really saw how upset he was about it...I definitely cried at that part. and it would have been perfect if Tess' little sister didn't come into it and grab his hand. oooooh I was so upset. That was my favorite part though...seeing how much he loved her..and his tears only made him more beautiful. :)

If you didn't come to the movie night...sucks to be you! You really missed out! haha :)

I vote YES to another movie night! This one was mega fun and I would love to do it again. It's fun to watch a movie for a book that we discussed so at length.

p.s. Did anyone else pay extra special attention to how you typed? Knowing that your AP teacher was going to read it and criticize it in her head? hahaha I can just picture Ms. Rhodehouse going over these and shaking her head and thinking "have they even learned anything??" bahahaha :)

  13. Is this how I respond to someone's comment? Just post another thing? hahaha well this is how i'm doing it!
And I'd like to say that i was totally thinking of Ms. Rhodehouse while typing this because she said in class.."don't wait till the last minute Sunday night!" and here I am..ten p.m. on Sunday night, typing up my response at the last minute. hahaha that's me, forever the procrastinator.

okay, let's get serious...this response is to HANNAH's comment..
Hannah! I agree with what you said about Tess being annoying in the movie. She cried the WHOLE friggen time! I can understand that she's sad and what not..but that was just too much! OH! and I saw her in "Clash of the Titans" and she cried alot in that one too! maybe she's trying to have that be her signature acting style or something...it's dumb. If she gets a guy as amazing as Percius (however you spell his name) then she has no reason to be crying! Honestly!

    CARLI :)

  14. For the record Ms. Rhodehouse I was in the dancce concert, for half of the concet actually, so i didnt get there until bout 9:00.

To answer the question of what stuck out to me in the movie, was the scene when Tess was being arrested and then killed. I love how the movie reflected back on when Tess was young and had first seen Angel. In the green meadow during the dance. Tess and Angel see eachother and the poeple soon fade away around them, leaving the two alone. I think it showed how happy Tess died. That even though she was taken away from her Angel once again, she knew he loved her and that he would grant her last request to marry her sister. I honestly did not mind the book or movie. Yes, it was completely frustrating throughout the whole novel, but I think the ending was great, and I was no longer distraught about it.

Thats pretty much my say about the movie and novel. It was written and the movie was very well done to match the book. That was an awesome night. Lets do it again. WOOT! WOOT!

  15. So just to comment on some other peoples post, I disagree with Hannah, at the part that the actors were choosen perfectly for the characters. I was a little worried about Angel, but I came to love him af his freckled, young face. I also did to disagree with Ashley, ALEC WAS SO NOT CUTE! He had creeper written all over his distrubing face of nastiness. bleh. Plus Jamie's project made him look like an even bigger creeper. meh. CREEPER! ok I'm done. I vote yes on another movie night and watching The Count of Monte Cristo. :D

    Rachel....again.

  16. Well, this is Cait Boyce from B2 reporting. I only stayed to watch the first half of the movie because, let's be honest, I watch the happy half of a lot of movies. (A Walk to Remember - I've seen the first half a gazillion times and the second half twice.) My thoughts on the first half are the following:

Alec wasn't as disgusting as I imagined. Angel was cute. Tess was perfectly cast.

Since it's about 20 minutes before we can't post anymore, I doubt anyone will read this, so... that's all.

  17. Still Cait here.

    Dear Hannah and Carli,

I'm typically a "be a man, rub some dirt in it" type of girl. Wimpy girls are sort of disgusting. But I'm just going to say it... Tess has a pretty solid excuse.

    That is all.
